‘GLOCAL MUSICAL LIVE’ season 3 provided a creative lecture for the selected creators on the program. At the 1st creative lecture on Sep. 28th, experts for domestic and global musical market were invited and they had a time to seek the characteristics of domestic & global market for the creative musical as well as the strategy for it.
A big wave, named 4th industrial revolution
Professor Dal-Young Jung at DONG-KUK University Performance Art emphasized ‘The Importance of Period’ to the creator members by opening the subject of this creative lecture ‘The 4th Industrial Revolution’. He said, “Anyone could be drowned unless he doesn’t think about the tide of Han River even if he used to be a good swimmer enough to swim across it”, the ‘period’ is a sort of big wave (tide) surrounding the whole world. So no work which doesn’t catch up the period’s stream or retrogress it won’t be welcomed even if the creative potential was great.
Professor Jung explained that the recent big stream surrounding us is the ‘4th Industrial Revolution’. The most important keyword of this 4th Industrial Revolution is ‘Intellectualization’. We make our computers learn a lot of DATA (a.k.a. big DATA) which we’ve used fast. Computers which learned enormous DATA with deep-learning already evolved into the Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) which made us feel shocked of the BADUK game with Se-Dol Lee. And this A.I. establishes the ‘Intellectualization of things’ on the products and services. Now this is the I.o.T (Internet of Things) technology to interact by connecting on the network, and so the connected things interact each other and find the most suitable way to solve the problem on their fields.
‘A.I.’, ‘Big DATA’, ‘I.o.T’ are directly related with the computer and software which we knew already. However those techniques are not stuck to the IT field. According to Jung, The 4th Industrial Revolution is already grafted into the creative field which deals with human’s creativity and emotion. The famous ‘House of Card’ on Netflix was already focused with the example which used this Big DATA on the process of creating the synopsis, as well as selecting director and characters. Also there are some cases that the 4th Industrial Revolution technology is not simply used as a tool of creation, but became ‘the Subject of Creation’ itself. KT’s 2nd ‘Artificial Intelligence novel contest’ and the robot actors in Japan are those examples.
Find the subject matter to survive in this period
Now the challenge between artificial intelligence and human is already begun. What kind of musical can survive in this period? Professor Jung gave 3 advices which are, first, to switch the original work on the other media into musical when choosing subject matter of the 4th industrial revolution, second, to provide imagination to borrow that developed technology as a subject matter furthermore to lead the future technology, and lastly dig up the new subject matter by considering the increasing potential target audience in the future.
Common feature of the two recent topical works, musical ‘The man who laughs’ and ‘Frankenstein’ is that these have those original novels. Reproducing a musical with another original media is a qualified creation technique with many cases. According to Jung’s data from the Korean economics in 2013, the top 5 works (phantom of opera, lion king, wicked, CATS and Les Miserables are all from their own original works by successive musical rankings. The profitability is good as well. While the movie ‘AVATAR’ got a record of $2.7 billion dollars profit, the 4th ranked musical ‘CATS’ has already got $2.8 billion dollars, more than ‘AVATAR’. Even the top ranked ‘Phantom of Opera’ earned $5.6 billion dollars.
Jung forecasted that the gap between those musicals and ‘AVATAR’ might be much estranged than before with regardless of those musicals’ rank changes among them even though the 1st rank of musical has been changed into ‘Lion King’ in 2018, about 5 years from the research that he found. Jung explained, “This causes the difference of profit model between the film business and that of performance.” Movie gets its profit intensively on a short period of time from the moment it starts, however, performance like musical is different. Closed (musical) work can be replayed and on that process it sometimes revivals. So it is necessary for us to look over the long haul. Of course the work has a higher chance to succeed as long as it survives, and the works which have their own originals are superior on that point of view. Jung cheered the creator members and said about digging up the subject matter, “recently the range of media which can be used as musical such as webtoon or drama as well as novel, so you should research as many genre as possible without any prejudice.”
And he mentioned, “Art once took its role to lead technology.” He thought that the invention of rocket by Robert H. Goddard (a.k.a. The father of rocket) was not even possible unless he enjoyed reading Jules Verne’s novel. Jules Verne had lead scientific fiction fields with his works such as 『Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours』 and 『Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea』. He wrote about the sky, under the sea and space trip on the period of no planes, submarines or space ships, therefore so many people were inspired by his novel to make his dream come true. Jung said, “Art has a power to suggest direction of change and to pull the result”, and explained that this is the reason and purpose for many companies and government set up the direction of future and use art as a specific tool for the future. On this matter, Jung regretted that most of the subject matters of selected works were retro style. He said that the recent created works are thought by creators who are only aware of ‘best sellers’, so he advised to members, “Write what you want to write with your imaginations”.
Jung changed the topic and asked to members about ‘the reason why most of the target audience of musical is 20~30 year-old-age’. There came up many answers such as, the musical is a sort of fantasy genre, influence of characters, or the people who have enough spare time, etc, however, Jung’s thought was different. It is true that recently the 20~30 year-old-ages audiences are the majority on the musical market, however, the manufacturers and writers also create their works just for the 20~30 year-old-age target as well. In other words, his opinion was that the works for the audiences except 20~30 year-old-age targets are not sufficiently created.
According to the statistics of INTERPARK which Jung provided, among the 2,538 musicals in 2017, 73% was for kids and families, whereas for adults was only 27%. But Korea has a recent condition as one of the extremely low fertility countries in the world, musicals for kids and families are getting reduced, the desired life time gets increasing to 142, so maturity market will be forecasted to get increased. Jung gave an example that and for the maturity market had succeeded huge, and advised to members, “Try blue ocean rather than struggling to the red ocean” by considering the fact that the composition of popularity has been changing. Professor Jung finished his lecture by saying, “I once told you to write what you want to write, now I am telling you to write for market’s needs”, and suggested members to create their works for as many target audiences as possible.
