Writer Yoo-Jung Kim
Introduction
Hello, I am a rookie writer Yoo-Jung Kim who debut with ‘Julie and Paul’ in 2017.
Momentum of Conception
While I was reading a journal about Shubert by chance, I was impressed that he thought of his fate similar to his string quartet ‘Der Tod und das Mädchen’. Shubert was known as a king of song, and a composer who wrote beautiful, lyrical music, however, I was so curious how painful his unknown despair was. I wanted to make whole new story of Shubert that anyone hasn’t seen before by adding imaginations and facts from studying Shubert as well.
How do you hope this work would be to the audiences ultimately?
I hope the audiences could have chance to meet a composer’s extreme and pure soul who protected his music at last by overcoming Franz Schubert’s inferiority through his last journey before he died.
Composer Ha-Nim Kang
Introduction
Hi, I’m Ha-Nim Kang, the composer for the music of this musical ‘Death and the Maiden’.
What is your first impression right after you read the scenario of this work?
Shubert was so pitiful. He died young, however he wrote and composed so many music in his short life. ‘Death and the Maiden’ was concentrated on the pathetic inside of Shubert who dug his music world by indulging his passion nevertheless of his incurable disease, and I totally agreed with him too. I hoped this work would show Shubert was just a person in front of me instead of the historical romantic composer.
Please introduce the overall music concept in this work.
I didn’t want to lose lyricism to the end even if characters sing various emotions and use lots of tempos and dynamics. I tried to express the change of Franz’s complicated mentality. And it was somewhat difficult but I tried to dissolve his works into the popular music.
