‘Dear Papa, My Fireman’ is a work about conflict and reconciliation between a fireman BAU Jang who always cares others first than his family, and his daughter Ae-Ri who’s been dreaming to be a rapper. Team of ‘Dear Papa, My Fireman’ who participated in the ‘GLOCAL MUSICAL LIVE’ season 3 with their writer and composer arranged composition and direction of each scene, and revised the first draft by re-constructing the characters and situations. At this 2nd mentoring time, they checked the revised scenario and numbers with the above revision, then discussed about the direction of the rest of scenario.
Mostly changed part on the revised scenario was about the configuration of his daughter, Ae-Ri. The aspirant of being a rapper, Ae-Ri’s team member has been changed from 3 girls group into mixed duet, because she’s preparing for being a singer as an idol member. Choo told about this as a “good choice”, and said, “Ae-Ri and newly added member Han-Young Lee will make abundant story.” Because this would be able to make more narrations of Ae-Ri’s own inside the story about the relationship concentrated on the father and daughter. Choo asked them to consider the incident which can make the relationships between these two people and Ae-Ri’s narration.
The core of ‘Dear Papa, My Fireman’ is about the conflict and reconciliation between the father BAU and his daughter Ae-Ri. For making these conflicts and reconciliations throw into relief, Director Choo said, “At the scene that Ae-Ri and BAU face together for the first time, it is necessary to make something expecting after stories.” Because there is no such showing off point except the relationships between the father and his usual adolescent daughter on the present scenario. Choo advised that the posterior drama would be much dramatic if the feature of BAU who doesn’t understand his daughter is intersecting the emotion of Ae-Ri which has been staying still 10 years ago just because of her broken heart by her father. Then she proposed the way to use by connecting the scene of two people’s first met with Ae-Ri’s feeling as a tip.
Director Choo also checked carefully about using numbers by each scene. She said, “Most important thing on the musical writing is to make the story flow, so we need to be careful for the story not to be delayed.” As for the issue, she suggested to consider again using numbers, because the used number that the scene of BAU Jang’s pushed for demand to pay of his underwritten many people’s debts on the early stage might delay the musical. Choo gave an hint that using script and short bridge music is much effective than singing. On the contrary, the scene of BAU Jang’s noisy farce accident on the rescue field was treated with his script and fast scene, director Choo told that using songs and scripts can make much comic and active scene on this kind of moment.
Team of ‘Dear Papa, My Fireman’ asked their mentor help them about the solution to use video actively when it’s been staged. Choo said about this, “It’s forbidden to use video clips just because there’s no solution,” so they need to always be careful when using video clips. Also she pointed out the practical issues such as production costs, and said that using music and choreography will be much effective and better way to make musical. Director Choo finally advised that, for using effective music and choreography, writer should make a sufficient space for music and dance to get into the scenario.
